Who Was St David?

February 23, 2025

Who Was St David?

Every year on March 1st, Wales comes alive with celebrations in honor of St David (Dewi Sant)—the nation’s beloved patron saint. But who was this remarkable figure, and why is he so important to Welsh history?

Who Was St David?

Born around 500 AD, St David was a Welsh bishop and preacher who founded monastic communities and spread Christianity across Wales. According to legend, he was born on a Pembrokeshire clifftop during a fierce storm. His place of birth and the cathedral built in his name became one of the most important medieval pilgrimage sites. Some say he lived more than 100 years and died on 1 March 589 - hence St David's Day.

Why Is He Wales’ Patron Saint?

After settling at Glyn Rhosyn, in south-west Wale St David dedicated his life to inspiring the Welsh people. His influence was so profound that, after his death, he was declared the patron saint of Wales, and his shrine in St Davids became a major pilgrimage site.

St David’s Last Words

Before his death on March 1st, 589 AD, he left his followers with a simple yet powerful message:

“Be joyful, keep the faith, and do the little things you have seen me do.”

This phrase, Gwnewch y pethau bychain (Do the little things), remains a well-loved Welsh saying today.

How Is St David’s Day Celebrated?

Across Wales and beyond, people celebrate with:

• Wearing daffodils & leeks – Traditional Welsh symbols associated with St David.

• Parades & concerts – Featuring Welsh music, poetry, and performances.

• Traditional Welsh food – Such as cawl (a hearty stew) and Welsh cakes.

• School celebrations & Eisteddfods – Showcasing Welsh culture through song, dance, and poetry.

St David’s influence is still felt today. The city of St Davids in Pembrokeshire, home to his cathedral, remains a site of pilgrimage. His message of faith, humility, and kindness continues to inspire people worldwide.
